Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not one-size-fits-all. Understand the common protections, key exclusions, and questions to ask before purchasing.

Travel insurance is easiest to understand when you stop thinking of it as one product. It is a group of possible protections designed for different kinds of travel disruption. The right policy depends on your trip cost, health needs, destination, activities, and personal comfort with risk.

What a policy may cover

Coverage varies, but many comprehensive plans include benefits for trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel delay, baggage problems, emergency medical care, and emergency evacuation. Each benefit has its own limit, qualifying reasons, exclusions, and documentation requirements.

  • Trip cancellation may reimburse eligible prepaid, nonrefundable costs when a covered reason prevents departure.
  • Trip interruption may help with unused arrangements and additional transportation after a covered event during the trip.
  • Medical coverage may address eligible care when your regular health plan offers limited or no protection abroad.
  • Emergency evacuation may help arrange and pay for transportation when appropriate care is not locally available.
  • Delay and baggage benefits may reimburse certain expenses after a qualifying delay, loss, or damage.

Covered reason matters

A policy does not cover every unexpected event simply because it disrupted the trip. The event generally must meet the policy's definition of a covered reason. Fear of travel, a change of mind, a known event, or a circumstance excluded by the policy may not qualify.

Some plans offer broader cancellation flexibility at an added cost, but these benefits often require purchase within a specific time after the first trip payment and may reimburse only a percentage of the loss. Read the timing rules carefully.

Timing can affect eligibility

Buying protection soon after the first deposit may preserve access to certain time-sensitive benefits, including some pre-existing medical condition waivers. Waiting until final payment can narrow the available choices. The best time to review coverage is when you begin making nonrefundable payments.

Ask these questions

  • What exactly is nonrefundable if the trip is canceled?
  • Does my health plan cover care outside the country?
  • Are my planned activities excluded or limited?
  • What are the medical and evacuation limits?
  • How are existing medical conditions handled?
  • What documentation is required for a claim?

Keep records

Save receipts, booking confirmations, policy documents, medical notes, carrier notices, and written proof of delays or cancellations. Contact the assistance line when an event occurs if you are able. A claim is easier to evaluate when the timeline and expenses are documented.

Travel insurance cannot prevent disappointment, illness, weather, or delay. It can create a financial and logistical plan for certain disruptions. The goal is not to buy the most expensive policy. It is to understand what you are protecting, identify the risks that matter to you, and choose coverage with clear eyes before the journey begins.
